What is suzume no tojimari?

Suzume no Tojimari (すずめの戸締まり, lit. Suzume's Door-Locking) is a 2022 Japanese animated fantasy adventure film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai.

The film tells the story of Suzume Iwato, a high school girl, who journeys across Japan closing mysterious doors that unleash disasters. She encounters a mysterious young man, Sōta Munakata, who is on a quest to find and close these doors. When Sōta is transformed into a chair, Suzume takes on the responsibility of closing the doors herself to prevent further catastrophes.

A recurring theme in the film is the concept of earthquakes and natural disasters, particularly the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The "Doors" represent portals to the afterlife that, when opened, allow the cause of these catastrophic events (represented by a giant worm-like entity known as the Worm or "Magra") to manifest and wreak havoc.

The film is a coming-of-age story about grief, healing, and moving forward after trauma. Suzume's journey involves confronting her past and ultimately finding closure.
